Community Recovery

There are many positives that have emerged during the pandemic, particularly in terms of communities and people in Weston and North Somerset supporting one another.While much of the focus has necessarily been on urgent need, there are also significant areas of life that have been put on hold or lost; jobs, businesses, educational opportunities, recreation and leisure, in-person social and support networks, the list goes on.Many organisations and areas across the Country are focussing on ways to keep the positives, while still addressing the scale of need. We’re asking for your thoughts on what would help to ensure that Weston and North Somerset can emerge from the pandemic as a stronger, happier, healthier and more inclusive community.

We want to understand how people are accessing information and support and what methods are working best for particular groups, so that we can help to ensure that future communications reach as many people as possible.

Information and Support 

Many agencies, voluntary groups and individuals have been involved in our area&#39;s response to the pandemic, with widespread action within and across the many different communities in the Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset area.As part of North Somerset Together, Voluntary Action North Somerset, has compiled a list of community support groups/organisations in response to COVID-19. It is regularly updated by VANS.Please do tell us about your experiences by answering the questions below. This will help us ensure that as many people as possible are able to access the help and support they need. We would also be very grateful if you could also complete the additional questions about you before leaving the site. The information you provide is completely anonymised before we see it, but it will be really important in helping us understand if there are gaps in provision and if particular locations or communities are not being reached.

Contributing to the Community

During 2020, the community played a critical role in helping to make sure that people’s essential needs were met. Support included shopping and medicines, providing free meals, helping to care for pets and lessening the impact of enforced isolation.In 2021, community action will continue to play a big part in helping us to recover from this pandemic. In addition to the essential and urgent needs of individuals, many organisations are also needing help to reorganise so that they can continue to deliver much needed support online and, when and where appropriate, in properly managed socially distanced spaces. The need to completely change established ways of working continues to be a major challenge for us all, and a wide range of skills is needed to ensure that the infrastructure of the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Sector (VCSE) can support the scale of additional need.Voluntary Action North Somerset (VANS) runs an Online Volunteer Centre to match community contributors/volunteers with the organisations that need help, and we want to understand how we can best help existing and prospective volunteers in the coming months. Existing and new Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Organisations have faced a range of challenges through the pandemic and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.To enable Voluntary Action North Somerset (VANS) to best support organisations and communities at a strategic level, through forums and through funding, we want to better understand the challenges organisations are facing now.If you are involved with a Voluntary, Community or Social Enterprise Organisation in any capacity (as a Trustee, paid worker or community contributor/volunteer), we want to hear about your experiences and hear your views on what you most need going forward.
